Day 1-Today we begin our “down under” experience with our flight to Fiji Islands.
Day 2-Since we cross the international dateline enroute to Fiji, we literally skip a day.
Day 3- Today we finally arrive in Nadia, Fiji, and begin with a quick tour of the city and stay overnight.
Day 4-Today we take a short flight to Auckland, New Zealand, the largest city in the country. From here we will take a three -hour trip to the city of Paihia, where we will spend the next two nights. Known as “the Jewel of the Bay Islands,” this seaside town has golden beaches, lovely coastal walking trails and waterfalls, and a colorful population of local birds. Paihia also holds an important role in the country’s history. It was here, after a century of conflict between indigenous Maori tribes and Western settlers, that peace was finally made and the groundbreaking Treaty of Waitangi was signed.
Day 5- They say you haven’t seen New Zealand until you see the northern tip, so that is where we will head today. This will be a full day trip, including an exciting ride on the only highway in the world that is actually on the sand of a beach! On the Cape Reinga day tour, be ready for a journey like no other with a full-day coach tour into the Far North of New Zealand. Along the way you’ll visit ancient kauri forests, drive along the sand of Ninety Mile Beach and even have a go at sandboarding – surfing down the massive sand dunes at Te Paki Stream. A visit to the very tip of Aotearoa (New Zealand) will open your eyes to Māori culture as you learn of the spiritual significance of this place where two oceans collide. After arriving in Cape Reinga and seeing the sights, we will return to Paihia.
Day 6- We will spend the morning exploring the city and the afternoon will be spent taking a cruise on the ocean to see the Bay of Islands and the Hole in the Rock. The Bay of Islands is a haven for marine life, including dolphins and whales. Cruise in and out of beautiful unspoiled islands, see the remote Cape Brett Lighthouse and the impressive Hole in the Rock at Motukōkako Island. We now will retrace our route back to Auckland for some urban explorations. We will spend the night in Auckland.
Day 7- This morning we will head to Matamata. Matamata is a rural town in the Waikato region of the North Island, located near the base of the Kaimai Ranges. The Kaimai Ranges is New Zealand’s largest forest park, covering over 37,000 hectares with over 360kms of walking and tramping tracks. There are several walking trails that start in the center of Matamata including Wairere Falls and the Kaimai Summit Loop Track, both offering spectacular views of diverse scenery. Matamata is well known for its thoroughbred horse industry, dairy farming heritage, and the historic Firth Tower Museum. While in Matamata a quick dip in the local thermal hot springs is a great way to relax and unwind! This is also where Sir Peter Jackson recreated the home of Bilbo, Frodo, and their friends for Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. As the Hobbiton Movie set is located on a private, fully functioning sheep farm you’ll see lots of sheep roaming around on your tour of Hobbiton! This attraction has brought visitors from all over the world with up to 3000 people visiting Hobbiton daily in the peak season. Here you can see Hobbit holes, the Mill, the Green Dragon Inn and learn how farmland was transformed into a living, breathing piece of Middle-earth. This afternoon we will continue along the highway to Rotorua, where there are many geothermal activities you might want to experience.
Day 8- This morning we will take a side trip to the Waitomo Caves to tour the world- famous Glowworm Caves including a boat ride through the glowworm grotto. This evening we will have the opportunity to get a glimpse of the Maori culture and to enjoy a traditional Hangi meal.
Day 9- This morning we will travel to Napier, where we will enjoy lunch, journeying through breathtaking scenery to this coastal city. You will see sheep-dotted hills, farmland, rugged hills, and rushing rivers along the way. Napier is famous for its art deco buildings and award-winning vineyards. After lunch we will continue on to Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, for the overnight. Tonight, you may wish to take a ride on the historic Wellington Cable Car for panoramic views that begins on Lambton Quay in the city center, operating since 1902.
Day 10-This morning you may visit the TePapa Museum or the Zealandia native bird sanctuary. In the afternoon we will leave the North Island behind us by taking a ferry across to the South Island. The Interislander ferry is the longest running Cook Strait ferry service in New Zealand. Interislander sails between Wellington (North Island) and Picton (South Island). Our Interislander ferry is known as one of the most beautiful ferry journeys in the world and one of New Zealand’s most iconic tourism experiences.
Day 11- We travel to Christchurch and Kaikoura. There are road closures along the coast, so we will be taking an alternative route to get to Christchurch, the second largest city in New Zealand. Christchurch is known as the “Garden City” because of its majestic trees and extensive gardens in the heart of the city.
Day 12– Today we will board the TranzAlpine train to Greymouth and cross the Southern Alps on a world-famous journey. On the way, you’ll pass through the patchwork farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, over a series of viaducts to the dizzy heights of Arthur’s Pass, crossing the Southern Alps to reach the wildly beautiful West Coast and seeing the country in all its spectacular variety. The world famous TranzAlpine train features new cars designed to provide passengers with the best scenic experience. Huge panoramic side and sky view windows give stunning at-seat views, while the open- air viewing carriage means there is nothing between you and that perfect photo opportunity.
Day 13- After arriving at the Greymouth destination, make sure you explore the region’s rich history, shaped by gold, coal, pounamu jade and rugged isolation. We continue on to Franz Josef along the wild western coast. Admire views of the famous glacier discovered by Europeans in 1865 and named after the Austrian emperor. Although the glacier has retreated considerably, it still is a great visible sight in the present landscape.
Day 14- Today we will head further south to the city of Queenstown. This journey will take us through lush plains and high country, past snowy mountain peaks and turquoise lakes. Queenstown was named for Queen Victoria and is surrounded by majestic mountains and nestled on the shores of a crystal -clear lake, Lake Wakatipu. We will spend three nights in this city.
Day 15- This morning we will head to picturesque Te Anau, gateway to the Milford Sound. We will be exploring the glacier-carved wilderness of Fjordland National Park. We will be passing through the Eglinton River Valley, Hollyford Valley, Homer Tunnel, Cleddau Canyon, and finally arriving at the Milford Sound. We will board the boat for astonishing scenery through fjordland.
Day 16- This morning we will visit the Kiwi Birdlife Park, a wildlife sanctuary located in the heart of Queenstown, including 20 endemic species, including the famous kiwi. This afternoon we will cruise across Lake Wakatipu to an authentic, family-run merino sheep farm, home to 30,000 sheep
Day 17- Today we will return to Christchurch and continue back to Sydney for our return flight.
Day 18- We will be ending our journey today by traveling back to Minnesota to reflect on all that we have seen on this great trip.
